Bigger life making you feel “off”? You’re on the right track.
You want a bigger life. You want to be the person you know you’re supposed to be and do the things you know you’re supposed to do.
It takes work to identify what that life would look like. And once you do the work, it’s scary to step towards that life.
There’s a reason your life has been the size it is. At least, until now. What you can handle is determined by your nervous system’s capacity to keep you feeling safe.
When you try new things you’re pushing against those limits. So the nervous system starts freaking out and sounding alerts.
It doesn’t know what’s going to happen. It doesn’t know that you can be safe. Yet.
The alerts your nervous system sounds are what we call dysregulation. You might feel anxious and think “This is a mistake. What was I thinking”. You might also dissociate, numb out, feel out of focus or depressed.
These are all different signs of nervous system dysregulation.
It’s important to remember that these signs don’t necessarily mean anything’s wrong.
On the contrary, they indicate growth.
Keep taking small steps towards your goals. And just know that every time you expand, your nervous system will need a little time to adjust and realize you’re still safe.
As you push your limits, your nervous system’s capacity to handle new things grows and you’ll be able to take on new challenges.
That big life you want? It’s one step at a time.
