About to meditate? Pull up a pillow and read this first ...
Somatic practices are about connecting the mind to the body.
In order to enter into a somatic practice, we must first find comfort. (Aren’t you glad you grabbed that pillow?)
Whether that means meditating or moving, comfort is key.
If we’re not comfortable, we can’t feel truly safe. And without safety, no real progress can be made. The same way that, as you are trying to fall asleep, you reposition yourself (usually a few times) to find the exact right arrangement of your body before you feel safe and supported enough to give in to sleep.
The same is true of any mindfulness practice.
So if you find yourself suffering through meditation, stop!
Find a pillow, change your chair, your posture, or your breathing. Check in with your shoulders, your jaw, your facial tension.
Do not expect yourself to be uncomfortable and growing. Find comfort first!
