You can’t just do this yourself
The first step to healing from trauma is recognizing that there are some things in life that you can’t do on your own.
I remember finding a turtle once that had a soda can connector wrapped around its body. I was trying to get it off alone, swatting at it, pulling on it, but it wasn’t moving.
The turtle was clearly freaking out.
3 minutes later, with the help of some scissors, I’d cut the plastic off his arm and leg.
It was easy for me to see what to do, given my perspective.
But for the turtle? For the turtle alone, it was a huge insurmountable problem.
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard someone say: “a therapist is a stranger. I know myself best. I don’t need to pay someone to listen to me when I know what I need to change.”
But can I let you in on a little secret? The fact that a therapist is someone who isn’t in your day-to-day life is what makes therapy so powerful.
Their outside perspective allows them to see patterns and habits that people in your life can’t see. Just like my ability to see where the plastic needed to be cut to save the turtle.
Going to a therapist who understands how to work with your body, to see the patterns you perform, and to support you through the work of feeling and releasing connections is one of the most loving things you can do for yourself.
It’s not like any other relationship in your life. And that’s what makes it so transformational.
