Need to make a decision?

When a client needs to make a hard decision, I suggest they pick one side, it doesn’t matter which.

Later the client can pick the other side to try that on, too.

Shelving one side allows the other side its fullest presence, without being constantly interrupted by the opposite arguments or justifications.

Knowing that side B will get its turn in the limelight might make it more amenable to wait.

The idea is to be, exist in the world (think, talk, act) as if the decision has been made and notice what comes up in the body.

Some emotion may arise and that’s ok.

Letting the emotions and other sensations move through the body is an important step towards getting clarity on what is the right decision to make.

The client can spend a whole session or even a few sessions sticking to that side.

If they’ have experienced some movement as a result of sensing into that side, they may have enough clarity to decide or they might notice it’s time to take on the opposite stance now.

This is a powerful way to make decisions. Especially when a decision has serious implications.

It’s a way to simulate having made the decision through the use of embodiment and then tracking the physical and emotional responses in the body.

This is different from analyzing and weighing the different options which often don’t yield the same results as with using Somatic tools.
